Situation 805: “Who should claim our son this tax season?”

Situation 805 is sponsored by West Coast Tires & Auto Center! 400 N. Broadway in Santa Maria (805) 631-5640

Good morning everyone so my current situation goes like this, I am a 29 year old mother of a 5 year old son. My son’s father and I separated when our son turned 1. I’ve never had him on child support because up until last year he’s always been good with helping me out financially.  Well I have always claimed him on my taxes. My ex asked me last tax season if he can claim him this year since I’ve always claimed him and he was a pretty good dad. I had agreed to but now I’m taking it back. My ex saw our son 4 times throughout the entire year!

He hasn’t really contributed financially. or any way actually. He has a new girlfriend who he’s spending all his money and time on which I don’t care what he does with his life as long as he understands our son is still his responsibility. Well, since I received almost no help from him for an entire year I don’t think he deserves to claim him. I made ends meet but I was able to make sure my son had everything he needed. I told him I was going to claim him for those reasons and he’s been saying I’m jealous of his new girlfriend. (SO NOT TRUE!) It’s almost like he is just using our son for financial gain. That money should somehow go back into our son or related expeses. Should I keep my word and let him claim him this year or should I claim him since his dad wasn’t really around this last year? Side note: I know this sounds horrible since there’s money involved but it’s something that needs to be discussed. Help! (email your situation to: listeners@957thebeatfm.com)
