Situation 805: “My daughter wants a smart phone, but I think she’s too young.”

What age is it appropriate to let you kid have have a cell phone. My daughter is turning 10 soon. For her birthday she wants an iPhone. I don’t think she should have a smart phone at her age. Besides we don’t need another monthly bill. She has limited screen time at home and her having a phone will be harder for us to manage how long she’s online. Her dad is caving in and wanting to just get her one. I feel as of right now currently it isn’t essential. She does school via Zoom, it’s very rare when she’s alone. I explained all of these things to her and in the future she will get a phone but it simply seems like a waste of money right now. And if we do get her a phone it’s going to be a phone that only provides the necessary calling and text. Smart phone will happen once she gets older. This little smart mouth child I have, had the audacity to say that’s she wants her $1,400 stimy to go towards an iPhone. That’s not what it’s for. Parents out there listening at what age is it appropriate to give our children a smart phone and why? Thanks in advanced. -Concerned mother.  (email your situation to: listeners@957thebeatfm.com)
