So I bought my girlfriend an engagement ring a few weeks back. I had planned on proposing to her on her birthday, but now I’m not so sure. I did all my research … her ring size … some of the of cuts she liked, she said she always wanted a Tiffany’s ring … and I chose one that looked like what she wanted from Tiffany’s pretty high color, cut, and clarity rating. And instead of white gold I went for the platinum band. So total I spent about $4K for the diamond (1.01 ct) and band the same looking one from Tiffany’s that would have cost me over 9k. I felt good and I was really excited. Well let’s just say the cat got out of the bag & she found out what I was doing and she knew what was coming. She was so excited too and kept asking me questions about the ring every day … and I couldn’t resist … I broke down and gave her little tidbits on information. It was fun I guess up until I mentioned how big the diamond was …. a 1ct cushion cut diamond. After I said this you should have seen her face … the look of disappointment on her face was too much … she tried to hide it and kept smiling but I knew she was disappointed. Plus the questions that followed made it even more clear. She tried to change to subject and then asked me “what if I don’t like it” and then she proceeded to tell me that I could have gotten a better one on eBay with certificate for $3K ….
